Measure from the finished lower approach to the finished upper landing. Also record clear width, overhead clearance, door swing, railing position, drainage slope and the path a wheelchair uses to enter and exit. A few inches can change the model or required construction.
Measure the full mobility device with footrests, anti-tip wheels, oxygen carrier or other accessories. Allow maneuvering room and identify whether straight-through or adjacent exit is safer. Confirm that the combined user-and-device weight stays below the rated capacity with an appropriate margin.
A professionally evaluated used lift can offer major savings when its rise, platform, controls and configuration fit the new site. Ask what has been inspected, what parts are included, what preparation and installation cost, and what warranty or service support accompanies the equipment.
Many VPL installations require a level concrete pad, an accessible path to the platform and secure construction at the upper landing for a gate. Mac’s installation information calls for smooth, flat concrete of specified size and thickness; every job must follow the selected manufacturer and local authority.
Consider outage frequency, user independence, available circuits, charger location and maintenance. Battery operation can preserve access during a blackout; AC can be simpler. Ask how emergency lowering works and who can safely use it if normal power or controls fail.
Temporary recovery, a short-term residence or uncertain future needs may make rental worth discussing. Ownership often makes sense for long-term access. Compare the total installed price—including permits, concrete, electrical work, gates, delivery and removal—not merely the lift’s equipment price.
Look for constant-pressure controls, an automatic roll-off barrier, a protected upper landing, obstruction sensing, emergency lowering, non-skid surfaces and appropriate gates or doors. Safety devices must remain functional and should never be bypassed to make an unsuitable installation fit.
Rules vary by city, county, state, occupancy and installation type. Ask the local authority which permits and inspections apply and whether a licensed trade is required. Commercial, multifamily and public-use projects may have requirements beyond a private residence.
Outdoor readiness does not eliminate the need for drainage, correct anchoring and routine care. Keep snow, leaves, debris and standing water away from the platform and tower. Follow the owner’s manual for inspection, cleaning, lubrication and battery replacement schedules.
A VPL is a complete access project, not just a machine. Electropedic can help coordinate product selection, site evaluation, delivery, installation and service from Burbank and Phoenix. Bring photos and measurements, then arrange a field evaluation before final ordering.
